Styling with colour

A coloured stone doesn't have to match anything. It just has to suit the person wearing it.

Three loose gemstones — a diamond, a blue sapphire, and a pink morganite — lined up beside a silver chain on white fabric.

The easiest way into colour is one piece at a time — a ring or a pair of earrings in a stone you actually like, worn on its own, before you think about coordinating it with anything else.

Metals matter less than people assume. Yellow gold warms a stone up, white gold or silver cools it down, and neither is a rule you have to follow — it's closer to trying on two versions of the same piece and picking the one that looks like you.

Once you've got one coloured piece in rotation, mixing it with other pieces, whether diamonds or gemstones, you already wear is less complicated than it looks. They're not competing for attention; they're doing different jobs.
