Why we only work in lab-grown

We didn't back into growing stones instead of mining them. It's the only way we wanted to make our jewellery.

Rough uncut diamond crystal beside a polished round brilliant diamond, comparing natural stone to a cut diamond.

When we started Aurea Jewellery, we wanted to exclusively use lab-grown gemstones for a variety of reasons. Not just for the problematic aspects of mining gemstones and diamonds, but also because growing gave us something mining structurally can't: a stone that starts existing because someone chose it, not one pulled out of the ground on the chance somebody eventually would.

That changes more than where the stone comes from. It means nothing in the range is sitting in inventory, and it means every piece can be traced back to the order that started it, not to a mine or a middleman.

We get asked a lot whether that's a compromise on the stone itself. It isn't, and the reasons are specific enough that we've written them up separately.
